LOCATION OVERVIEW

Galicia, the northwest corner of Spain, will be the location for this photography workshop.  A beautiful part of Spain, and a unique culture apart from the rest of the country, this is a perfect environment to learn new photographic techniques and refine current skills.

We will be based in three locations: Santiago de Compostela, a world heritage medieval city - landmarked and architecturally preserved (5 nights), a small, old fishing village on the Atlantic (3 nights), and a private manor house with ancient vineyards and grand gardens (3 nights). This combination gives a near total experience of the history and culture of Galicia, and its great people who predate the Celts and the Romans.

The schedule  gives enough time to integrate into the culture and provides a complete range of subjects to photograph. Note that at this time of year it is daylight until 10 pm and not totally dark until 11:00 pm.

This region is a gastronomic delight with fresh seafood (mussels, octopus, clams, squid, and shrimp), and some very good varieties of tasty white meat fish. All are locally harvested. Delicious local breads, cheese, local vegetables and excellent regional wines as well.

Throughout the two weeks, there are multi-celebrations and much to see and hear of the Galicia music and dance. As always, weather and sporadic, unplanned opportunities will be incorporated into the plans. Whatever happens, there are endless opportunities for great pictures.

SCHEDULE OUTLINE

June 15, 2017 -June 26, 2017 (5 nights) Santiago de Compostela.

June 15. Group arrives and checks into a beautiful family   owned hotel with colorful garden on the edge of the historical district.

During these days we will see daily arrival of many pilgrims who have walked one of the St. James trails to reach Santiago and the Cathedral, experience special celebrations and a large daily market. We'll explore the historic streets and world famous cathedral (third most important after Rome and Jerusalem). There will be a couple day trips to nearby villages for local celebrations, crafts people and historical manor houses with gardens and vineyards.

June 20, 2017 - June 23, 2017 (3 nights).

Mid-day move to a small fishing village approximately 1-1/2 hour drive north along the Atlantic coast. Tucked into a little cove we will see colorful fishing boats, a picturesque harbor, and some views of the powerful Atlantic ocean. A day trip up to the centuries old picturesque Finisterre village is included. Overlooking the Atlantic, it was declared by a Roman general in the first century as "the end of the world" because nobody could go any further west by land. It is also very important to pilgrims.  After stopping in Santiago de Compostela,  some will continue to walk here as their final destination. (Note: Fisterra has its own stamp for traveler's passports).

June 23 - June 25, 2017 (3 nights)

A grand family owned manor house, beautifully refurnished but keeping the period look, with very old vineyards and traditional way of processing the grapes.  Nearby is another private manor house with a very large landscaped garden of flowers and a variety of trees.  Breakfast and dinner included here.

We will meet daily for field sessions and demonstrations and will periodically critique participants' work. We will be together photographing at various times of day from sunrise to sunset, with breaks scheduled most afternoons. Students are expected to organize their digital images for review on the next day.

The workshop will show you how to work with minimal equipment and maximum adaptability. We will work on analyzing the quality/direction of light, composing the image and anticipating the unfolding activity. You will learn new camera techniques appropriate to the conditions, including HDR exposures, low light photography, black and white techniques and others.

This is a magical opportunity for photographers in a less-travelled area of Spain.

A list of suggested equipment and other travel needs will be emailed to all in the class.

The cost of the trip is EARLY REGISTRATION $3800. per person for double occupancy. Additional $600 for single room. LATE REGISTRATION, after January 5:  $4150.  Additional $600 for single room.  This includes hotels with breakfast (breakfast plus dinner during the 3 nights in the Manor house), tips and local ground transportation related to the workshop.

Not included are all drinks (except breakfast), lunch or snacks, airfare or other ground transportation prior to or after leaving the workshop.
